Enriched electronic sound delivers a mature perspective, which leans towards the urban edges. Complex structures easily showcase the creative mastery at work. And did I mention the great mix? Now I have.
Favorite track: Archipelago.
"Rhodes Dub" - actually a playing a virtual Rhodes emulation (AAC Lounge LIzard as it happens) through a particularly gnarly space echo.
"Zyzzyx" - ends up kinda being techno but also ... something else? All I really want is a lead sound, some drums and a bassline.
"Attakenini" - hectic techno drums drive a bouncy polyphonic ostinato, with a really rude bassline.
"Disphemism" - Beatless, meandering, glitchy ambience, fractally disassembled by an abused live sampler.
"Octothorpe" - trying to hit that Fennesz sweet spot where something really musical and meditative rubs against an undomesticated, chaotic sound that ebbs and flows beneath it.
"Archipelago" - an exploration in sequencing chords to a slowed down house beat. The treble sound that dominates the second half of the piece that swoops and dives comes out of an interaction between chaotic chord changes constrained to a scale by a quantizer. It was a sound that came as a complete surprise. The best kind.
It's really a perfect blend of light and dark as far as I'm concerned. Every track utilizes each instrument with grace and exists in its own specialized area. Events unfold in clever ways throughout. Belial Pelegrim
